The Author's Inspiration.

The inspiration for Allysa Salena's debut novel originates not only from the rich cultures of Africa, but from her love for all animals both big and small. Her childhood New Year's Eve tradition involved watching Disney's The Lion King with her dad and carrying around an animal encyclopedia.

When she wasn’t crying over Mufasa, Allysa also found herself engrossed in Animal Planet's The Crocodile Hunter, hosted by Steve Irwin. Presently, she follows the conservation efforts led by Steve Irwin's family—Terri, Robert, and Bindi Irwin—at the Australian Zoo, the animal hospital, and their nonprofit organization, the Wildlife Warriors.

During her writing process, Allysa dedicated over 50 hours to watch animal documentaries and read educational journals. Recognizing the platform she has as an author, Allysa believes in using it to educate readers about animal and wildlife conservation. Her novel showcases over 30 animal species and in our present world, each of these species face various threats such as habitat loss, pollution, disease and climate change.

To further contribute to awareness, the back of the novel includes a glossary detailing each animal's conservation status, quotes from renowned authors about animals and nature, and practical ways for readers to contribute to the well-being of animals in their own areas.

A Whisper in the Wild serves not only as a captivating coming-of-age story that takes place in a world full of animal shifters, but also as a means to inspire and inform readers about animals and the importance of wildlife and animal conservation.
